PIANO COMPETITION INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS

COMPETITION OVERVIEW

Open to young pianists ages 18 and under, the Steinway 2018 Piano Competition offers national recognition, professional critiques, and prize money of up to $1,000

Objectives of this competition

-  Steinway Branding- Canada’s first amateur piano competition for youth under 18 years old by Steinway & Sons (not to be confused with the existing Steinway International Youth Piano Competition)
-  Community participation
-  Promote Piano Education and nourish promising musicians

REGISTRATION

a convenient online tool called “Acceptd” to manage communications with participants and schedule auditions. Please visit www.steinway.com/competition and click on the ‘register’ button and then go to the landing page and find on the left top to ‘start an application’.

Participants will be required to submit a $75 application fee though Acceptd, which will be sent to Steinway & Sons. Registration fees through Acceptd go towards the Acceptd management tool, certificates, medals, marketing support, national promotion, and adjudicator co-op (Steinway will not be making profit on the competition).

PARTICIPANT CATEGORIES:

Division I              Ages 9 and under
Division II             Ages 10-13
Division III           Ages 14-18

 

PRIZES:

All contestants will receive a commemorative Steinway certificate of achievement. First, second and third place winners in each division will receive Steinway lyre medals.

First place winner will win cash prize:

Division 1: $400
Division II: $700
Division II: $1000

  • Opportunity to be nominated as a Young Steinway Artist*
  • Performance at the Steinway Hall, New York*
  • Audio, video and Spirio recording of the Steinway Hall performance*
  • Attend a master class with a renowned Steinway Artist in New York*

RULES AND REGULATIONS:

  • Age requirements apply to applicant’s age as of April 1, 2018.
  • The competition is open to all residents of Canada.
  • Competitors are responsible for their own expenses to participate in the competition, including the cost of their travel.
  • Contestants should wear their best performance attire and should check in at the competition at least 15 minutes before the beginning of their performance.
  • Applicants will not be allowed to submit their application unless all information is complete. An acknowledgment will be sent to each applicant upon receipt of the completed Application Form and enclosures through Acceptd.
  • Qualifying competitors must perform live in order to be considered. Judges reserve the right to cut off a performance at their discretion. If a competitor misses their turn, they will have forfeited their chance to participate (no refunds).
  • Evaluations for each round of the competition made by the jury committees are final.
  • Steinway & Sons and Tom Lee Music reserve the rights to photograph, record, or video the auditions of contestants and winners and to use these documents for marketing purposes.

No extra fee will be paid to the contestants.

  • Steinway & Sons reserves the right to the interpretation of the Terms and Conditions of the Regulations.

 

REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS

At least two pieces of contrasting style and period:

  • Div. I - max. 8 minutes (10min per audition)
  • Div. II - max 10 minutes (12min per audition)
  • Div. III - max 15 minutes (15min per audition – no flex time necessary/judges can cut them off if needed)

All applicants will be provided an opportunity (at least 20 minutes) to reheasal on the competition instrument before their audition.  Please contact your PC to arrange rehearsal time.

There is a chance that judges will need to cut off performances. If a competitor misses their turn, they will have forfeited their chance to participate (no refunds).
